installing software in wine
 

hi guyz, I have managed very well to install some windows apps in wine,but when i install a program like nero which needs the cdrom, it gives me an error message when in the process of installation. it says "no cdrom drive detected" any help is appreciated.

do you really need nero?

I just wanna ask you something: Did you ever try k3b? If yes, why is it not good for you, if not, try it. Every feature of nero can be found in a linux app. CD/DVD mastering: k3b, cover creating: kover... What do you miss from Linux, that you need nero?
If you wanna use nero, use windows instead of linux.

I agree with pusrob. What ever you need in linux you will find it. Infact it has good applications for multimedia both playing mp3, watching videos and burning Cds and DVDs. Linux is the best. Which linux distro are you using? Have you tried Mandriva Linux 2006 or SUSE linux 10.0 or 10.1?

Thanx for quick reply, i always use k3b. But i was only giving an example of an application, so is there a way of configuring wine that i should know? please is just for knowledge. Am an addict of SUSE 10.0 n Linux in general.

It would be easier for everybody, to know, for what exactly do you want to use wine. You must know, that wine is not a windows replacement, and many, more complicated apps wont work. So, keeping this in mind, try to specify, for what do you need wine. An advice here: try not to use wine, if its unnecessary, try to find a linux app instead. If you cant find a linux app for that purpose, then you can try to use a winapp through wine. And if you can't install/run the winapp, then you can return here with a particular, exact problem.

Ok there are 2 ways to get your CD working in wine:

Mount the CD as normal (don't forget to put a CD in with some data on it) then try to install your program.

Run winecfg and (also witha CD in) click on the 'Drives' tab, click Add and browse to your CD mount point.

I'm not sure at all that Nero will work properly in wine but there is a linux version of Nero.

thanx alot guyz,I wanted to use free rip to rip my mp3 files from audio cds, application in suse is ripping to .wav files which takes more space on my disk.And am sorry for late replies, i dont have full time access to internet.Afrika. Nway thanx for help

Try RipperX or Grip. They both rip to mp3 but they will first rip to wav and then convert to mp3. I believe it is the same with all rippers so you need the space for wavs.
