Installing software

I'm very new to Linux and I've come to realise that installing software on Linux is not quite as easy as Windows;) Does anyone have a link that explains the various ways of installing and uninstalling software?

It helps if you say which distribution you have. Different distribution use different methods so you don't need to know them all ;)

Keywords: package management :)

A random link from Google:

As a debian user, I have to say installing software was never this easy on win platform.

I'm that new I didn't realise they were called packages.

I'm running Mandrake 10.1 and KDE 3.2.

I've got hold of a 250+ page manual which should help me get into Linux! In the meantime, I've downloaded edonkey. Both the command line and GUI add-on. They are RPM packages, so double clicked on the files in my tmp directory. The first appears to have installed but the latter had an error:

Some package requested cannot be installed:
ed2k-gtk-gui-0.6.3-2.i386 (due to unsatisfied libexpat.so.1)
do you agree ?

Now I know Windows can be a bit obtuse, but what does this mean?

urpmi

I believe Mandrake uses urpmi as its default package manager. Yum or apt can be installed as alternatives.
