Installing slackware with a different window manager
 

I want to use a window manager like blackbox or fluxbox with X on slackware.. how Do i go about using it instead of kde or gnome.. and does that mean i dont need to install any kde or gnome packages?

You don't need gnome or kde packages. But the best place to start knowing what to start is the documentation of the windows manager you want. Go to their website and read the installation documentation.

if you did a full install you should be able to run pkgtool and change your WM there.

thats just it i dont wsant to do a full install, i am short on disk space and thats why i wanted to skip the gnome and kde package.. So just install x then manualy install the wm?

During the Slackware installation you get your choice of Window Manager to use ... including Blackbox and many others. KDE and Gnome are just the two most commonly selected.

Which install method is that under?

I'm trying to remember. I believe I use ... "Menu," if I'm not mistaken.

After you choose packages (don't bother with the K or G packages if you're not using those WMs) and install most everything, it'll ask you to choose a manager. There's quite a list!

well its pretty simple, i just did this myself. when you install slackware, just install the base package. reboot your comp and login as root. now, put the first cd into your drive. mount it and cd to it in the "slackware" directory. then cd to the "x" dir. now just type in "./install-packages" . this will run the script to install all the packages. the only ones you really need are the base X server and the font files, but just to be safe, install them all, you can always remove them later with pkgtool . so after you've run the script to install the x server, cd to the slackware/xap dir on your cdrom. again run the script "./install-packages" the only one you need here is fluxbox though you might want some of the other packages. after thats all installed, your almost there. run xwmconfig and choose fluxbox as your defualt window manager. provided the xserver works first try, then you should boot right into fluxbox nice and easy. hope this helps!

ok well disk space is the biggest concern so is there any packages you KNOW i can skip?

after you login just use the command "xwmconfig" and you can pick your window manager
