Installing Samba & Running

I just installed Slackware 10.1 on my Toshiba laptop and there is a network in my house with all windows XP users. I intsalled Samba (./augotgen.sh, ./configure, ./make, ./make install) and then tried the instructions to run it but neither of them worked. I tried editing the inetd.conf file in the etc directory but that did nothing and I do not know how to make a script in order to run it as a Daemon ( I dont even know what that means). All I did to make a script was type:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
in the basic text editor, then made it executable with the chmod +x filename command and then tried to run it using ./ . I am very new to linux and am getting used to the installation procedures and what not, but am not able to run anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why not just use the one that comes with slackware? Then you can run it at boot with /etc/rc.d/rc.samba (just do 'chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.samba ;./etc/rc.d/rc.samba start). The configuration file for it would be /etc/samba/smb.conf (there is a /etc/samba/smb.conf-sample that you can edit and copy to /etc/samba/smb.conf). To uninstall the samba you installed just go to the source directory and type 'make uninstall'. If you removed the original source directory you will have to untar it, and do ./autogen.sh, ./configure then make uninstall.
