installing RtCW

Im about to put rtcw on my RH-9 install and I was wondering if anyone had a few tips or some helpful info on the most efficient way of installing the game. Im assuming that the procedure to install rtcw is the same as q3... Run the patch then copy the files from the cd to the proper dir's... etc. Is this how to install RtCW in linux?

Gerardoj 05-31-2003 07:57 PM

Yep you have right, tips:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein linux is using a graphical installer (based on Loki software's Setup Graphic Installer). The .x86.run files are meant to be executed (you may need to make them executable with chmod +x file.x86.run).

and

Installing from a retail win32 Wolfenstein CD-ROM:
--------------------------------------------------

You need to download a wolf-linux-*-full.x86.run setup file (replace '*' by the latest version, file is approx 80Mb). The full setup contains the latest RTCW Linux binaries and the GOTY updates.

From a retail Wolfenstein installation on Windows, copy the following files to your /usr/local/games/wolfenstein/main directory:

Please note that the files are not directly accessible on the CD, they are packaged inside the installer. If you don't have a windows installation to perform the extraction of the files, you can run the win32 setup from linux using WINE (http://www.winehq.com).

and Last question: whare did you get RTCW? is the demo version?

Waiting....

I've played this game all the way through several times on both Win98SE and Mandrake 8.2, and it's well worth the effort to get it working in Linux, my own personal opinion is that is looks better in LInux than Win98, especially the fog/smoke effects.

Hey another question, Do you have some Nvidia Geforce, or special Video Card? or in linux can you play it without Video Accelerator ? Because to play in Windows you need a Video Accelerator!!1

Thanks

akaBeaVis 05-31-2003 10:57 PM

Yes, I had a lowly geForce2MX200 with 32mb of ram, on an Athlon Thunderbird 900 with 384mb of ram at the time. That video card can be bought for less than $50 US now.

In linux, just as in Windows, you'll need acceleration to play this game, the good news is that nVidia has supported 3d accel in linux on their cards for a long time, even better news is that ID Software has done the same thing (time to drool over Doom3!).

Thanx for the info fellas. Gerardoj, after I installed the patch and viewed the contents on the cd I disocovered that its not quite the same as q3. No problem tho.. I had a RtCW install on my c/win drive. So I just copied the files over.. thanx for listing them. ;) Now.. I know there is a way to just use the files from my windows disk using sym links or sumthin..??? Is that a difficult task? I have never used these before so the concept is quite new to me.

Gerardoj 06-01-2003 11:30 PM

No this not a difficult task if you remember always follow the steps, and maybe you can download VMware I suggest you that is better to do all extracts and everything. And your Welcome!!!!!!!

if you have questions feel free to email me !!!

Having trouble

I have tried both the Tux Games installer, and the installer off the RTCW cd using wine, to no avail. Since I don't have a windows install, this is proving to be somewhat difficult.

With wine, the installer starts up fine, but doesn' t let me write to disk, it looks like (running wine as root). If I try to install in c:/program files... (the default dir) it gives me an error opening the first file (cdkey). If I try to save on any other drive, it says there is not ennough space (even though I have tons of space).

And the tuxgames installer stalls 75% of the way through, just freezes every time.

Don't know what to try next.

Hopefully you have some flavor of windows installed on another machine or can access a comp with a cd-burner that has windows on it. If that's true, let me know and I'll post a detailed listing of the windows files you'll need to copy to your linux box and where they go.

sangrelinux 06-25-2003 11:35 PM

I don't have any here. But I'll send my installation disk to a relative with the instructions, I think I know which files they are. Then they can send me the disks back. It'd be nice if a there was another way, though. :)

im so frustrated and confused! I have no clue what any of you are talking about! i fee like i just blew $50 buying Red Hat 9.
How do i install RTCW straight from the CD onto Linux?
i have NO EXPERIENCE with linux, besides installing it. help is very appreciated!

step by step instructions would be GREAT!

Linking?

When it comes to Dual booting with Windows, is it possible to install the game on a FAT partition and link the game to that partition while installing the appropriate linux binaries on your /local/games dir?
I know this is possible with quake but I was wondering is it the same for every game or must you install a copy of RTCW (or any game for that matter) on 1 drive for Windows and another copy for Linux alone?

akaBeaVis 07-24-2003 07:50 PM

I'm not sure about the other games, but RtCW required me to both have it installed on the windows partition and additionally, manually copy certain files from that installation to my linux directory in order for it to run, it's been a while but I believe they were .pak files.

Best thing I could suggest to you would be to connect to the irc.enterthegame.com irc server and goto channel #linux. Then ask your question there. 99% of the time there is someone idle looking for something to do. ;) If im in there ill walk you through it.
