Installing RedHat 6.2 - CD/DVDROM not recognized?
 

I'm trying to install RedHat 6.2 I downloaded from here (redhat-6.2-i386.iso):
archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/6.2/en/iso/i386

I burned image onto a CD (not DVD). CD boots fine, it shows me that "welcome to Redhat" screen where I can enter boot options. First, I tried just pressing "Enter" without entering any commands. After a few seconds I was asked to choose a language and after that, to choose a keyboard type. But after choosing a keyboard type, installator asked me what type of device holds installation media and there were two options available - Local CDROM and HardDrive. I chose Local CDROM and then I was presented with another screen asking me to choose a driver. There were two categories - "SCSI" and "Other CDROM". Each had many different drivers, but no matter what driver from the list I chose installator returned to the previous screen with "SCSI" and "Other CDROM" categories. And here is my problem - I can't get past that screen that asks about installation media.

I've already tried a few things, with no success. At "Welcome" screen I tried entering these commands:
But the result was the same - I still couldn't get past the installation media choose screen.

I've also tried entering BIOS and configuring SATA as IDE (it was configured as AHCI) and then running installation with command:
Here I didn't even get to choosing language screen, as installator just showed me that there's "Uknown IDE controller on PCI bus".

I'm not really a hardware guy and I'm new to Linux at all (I've got the latest Ubuntu 16.04 installed on my computer which I installed only a few days ago) and I just don't know what to do to resolve this issue.

I think that the problem isn't with a corrupt iso or bad quality CD, because I've also tried installing RedHat 9 using isos from the website I posted link to above. And I encountered same issue - after choosing language and keyboard type installator showed me message: "Unable to find devices of the type needed for this installation type." and then asked me if I want to select a driver or use a driver disk.

My CDROM is "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223F ATA Device".

Welcome to LQ! You know that's 17 years OLD, right? (kernel 2.2.14!)
Since your dvd is *Sata* (not ParallelATA), RH6 might be too old to recognize it.
(I'm not sure if there's a way around that; other LQ'ers?)

Can you try the boot option: ide=nodma And maybe init=/bin/sh (to look at dmesg & try stuff)

p.p.s. IF you want to try (OLD) distros, how about in VirtualBox?

Yes, I know this OS is 17 years old. I just need it to run some old software that works best with RedHat (I tried running it on Ubuntu 16.04 and not everything works). Perhaps the problem is that I have a modern PC I built a year ago - I have an MSI Z87-G43 (MS-7816) motherboard and Intel i5-4460 CPU. Nevertheless, I'll try the options you mentioned. Thanks!

Sorry, no...nothing you're doing is going to work, period. Even *IF* you get it booted, it's going to die promptly after that. It's not going to know about your hard drive controllers, network cards, etc. So unless you have a 17 year old machine sitting around, stop where you are.

You don't say what this old software actually is, or why exactly you need a commercial, PAY FOR distro like RHEL 6.2 to run it, but your far better option is to load something current on the new hardware, and TRY your software first. If it doesn't work, then get a version of CentOS 6.2 (which is free), and build a machine in Virtualbox to run it.

Loading a 17 year old 32 bit OS on a brand-new 64 bit machine is pointless.

What old software you are trying to run, and why Virtual Box is not an option?
