Installing RealPlayer

Ubuntu 8 or 9 (I haven't figured out how to tell which one is on my computer). but I was pretty sure it's 8.10. At least the Update Manager, after installing the latest updates, will not bring up the box for updating to 9.

When I try to install RealPlayer 11Gold, downloaded from the RealPlayer website for deb,I get an error message:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: lsb (>=3.1)

The Ubuntu Help says that one way to do this is to look for it in Synaptic, but it's not there on my list. I also downloaded and saved the file in Desktop, but that route for installing is blocked because the installation procedure refuses to find the file that's there.

I have also tried to install vlc, following the installation instructions on the Korn website exactly and had it blocked for various reasons. Ditto with Helix. But I would like to install RealPlayer if I can get past the above.

Thanks.

The command
Code:
lsb_release -a
will tell you. Regarding the lsb issue, maybe you have to install lsb-base. I don't know which repository provides it, but check your package sources and eventually enable the missing ones (take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu to see a detailed explanation of the different repositories: main, restricted, universe, multiverse). Hope this helps.
