Installing Qmail

Hi,

I'm trying to install Qmail. This is what I have:

I created the usr/src/redhat directory then ran

rpm -i qmail.1.03-13.src.rpm

now I have to subfolders in that directory- SOURCES and SPECS.

the printed directions I have state to run this command in SPECS:

rpm -bb /qmail.spec

First - -bb is not recognised as an option so I tried to replace it with -i and was told that qmail.spec is not a valid package.

There is a bunch of files in the SOURCES directory, tar.gz...

Anybody have any help for a newbie? Or even a rock solid rpm with directions for installing Qmail will be appreciated.

Thanks

don't use a src rpm file, this is, as you may have guessed, source code, not a compiled program. instead go find a i386.rpm version (or i686, i586 etc...) and install that.

Qmail is only distrubuted in source form.

The best way to install is to get the netqmail tar file from:
http://qmail.org/top.html

Then follow one of these tutorials:

http://www.qmailrocks.org

No, I didn't know that. I never linked the src with source code. As I said, I'm new to linux. But now I know something else about it.

While we're at it...

What does a package that contains .arc or .noarch mean?

and what do I replace that with? I have a P2 400MHz.

Thanks.

/me is a fool. ok ok ok....

do what david said....

never seen a .arc file before... maybe just a certain providers suffix, e.g. dag and fr. noarch though, that means that it is architectuure independent, normally implying that there is no compiled content, only scripted langauges, e.g perl or python.

The source only thing isn't 100% true but DJB would likely come after you with a big stick ;) - see:
