Installing Programs/Drivers etc.

I have installed Mandrake 9.1 and everything appears to be OK but being used to Windows I would like to know where to find basic info such as how to install programs and drivers.
Most sites start with assumptions that you are already aware of how to do this and I would really appreciate it if someone could point me to a site that would start from the real basics as I am really impatient to learn.

Impatient to learn and using Linux. Lethal combination.

These 3 articles expalin very carefully and in excruciating detail how to install lots of different types of software. RPM's, binaries, tars, gzips, etc. I think you will be pleased with the info. Hope this helps. If it does, post a response.

Im not impatient, i spend 2 days reading so many articles for glib/pango and all that shit, none ever worked. It could be w/ all the diff things and commands i've tried i did something wrong and messed up the system, so thats why imma try a fresh install.

And thank you for the sites, i love to read up on more linux stuff

I found these articles very informative and whilst they did not answer all my questions they gave me a greater understanding of Linux and encouragement to continue.
