Installing Pidgin with missing dependencies without root access

Hi,

I'm trying to install Pidgin in my home directory on a computer for which I don't have root access. The problem is that there's at least one missing dependency, so my question is, is it possible to compile any necessary dependencies in another folder in my home directory and tell Pidgin to look there when I ./configure? I tried typing ./configure --help to look at the options, but it was all a bit over my head. I guess it would be possible to add the directory to my path, but that doesn't seem like a very elegant solution.

I guess you basically could (just set the PREFIX= and other options, library paths etc. like ./configure --help tells you), but is it worth it all?

Maybe just ask the administrator to install Pidgin. It's not that big a deal, and if there's no good reason not to install, maybe the admin will (or then you'll get a hopefully good reason why it'll not be installed).

If you've got Gaim, it's nearly all the same. The name change came so short time ago, that the last Gaim and current Pidgin don't differ from each other that much yet..
