installing package x needs 84MB on the /filesystem

While installing an RPM x, it gave the error message as shown in subject.

I used "df -m" and found the /filesystem has 406MB available space.

What is the issue here?

Thanks,

space on /filesystem

Can you copy over the exact error message?

A copy of the output from "df -h' may also help.

I would find it most odd if you really had a partition or filesystem named /filesystem. Even more odd if any RPM would install files to that location!

It's possible you've got a deleted file on there that is being held open by another program.
Try using lsof, fuser on that partition. (Or just reboot)

chrism01, thanks.

I used the command lsof and see the files open. I do not know what to expect with command fuser.

Also what kind of result will tell files deleted still holding the space?

Thanks a lot.

fuser

The command 'fuser' run against a file, folder, or partition will show what processes have it open. Check the man pages for details.

In this case, I strongly suspect that you will want to try a little rpm cleanup, then reboot the system when you have an outage window. Even if what we suspect is NOT the problem, that has a high probability of resolving the error.
