Installing Open Office and J2RE... where is Java?

Hi everyone,

I remember doing this with Star Office 5.2 a year ago... seems I've forgotten.

I've installed Jave Runtime Edition and I'm almost through with the Open Office installation and now it's asking for the location of Java.... and therein lies the problem.

Where the heck is Java?

Hmmm,

I type whereis and I get "java:" (yep, with a colon)... now what does that mean?

try typing...

which java

and see what you get, on my system (actually I have 2 suse 7.2 systems and the java symlink is in a different location on each for some reason ?!?) it's in /usr/lib/java/java which links to my current java bin /usr/lib/java/j2re1.4/java.

hope this helps ;)

BRILLIANT!,

Thanks Fatgod, it was in the /usr directory.... hmmm, would you know how to tell open office where my java is now that I completed the installation without it?

Sorry dude, I've been trying to get openoffice to run for a while but I have given up on it for the time being...

It installes OK, or so it seems, but when I run it I get the OO splash screen but after it goes the terminal just states 'aborted'

Did you install OO1.0 as root? I think it has some problem with permission. If you installed it as root, try running as root.

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4614

If you wish to debug the problem, edit the soffice and change the second last line to:
strace $sd_prog/$sd_binary

You can capture the output. You can vote on the bug to get more attention. I already put 2 votes.

On my first installation it just refused to save.... anyway I uninstalled it and then reinstalled so I could point out where java was... and everything seems ok up to this point....

This probably isn't good advice but why don't you try that (uninstalling then reinstalling)?

... it just might work:p
