installing octave

I am trying to install Octave on RedHat 8. It configures fine but when I do make I get this error:

In file included from mx-defs.h:73,
from dColVector.h:32,
from Bounds.h:32,
oct-cmplx.h:28: syntax error before `;' token
In file included from dColVector.h:32,
from Bounds.h:32,
mx-defs.h:82: parse error before `&' token
mx-defs.h:83: `c_c_Mapper' was not declared in this scope
mx-defs.h:83: parse error before `&' token
mx-defs.h:83: ISO C++ forbids declaration of `Complex' with no type
mx-defs.h:83: typedef declaration includes an initializer
mx-defs.h:83: confused by earlier errors, bailing out
make[2]: *** [Bounds.o] Error 1

make[1]: *** [liboctave] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/evan/progs/octave-2.1.9'
make: *** [all] Error 2

It seems like this is where the error starts, has anyone installed this successfully and know what is going wrong here?
