Installing NVIDIA driver error with the kernel header does not exist

i am using suse 10.1 and i am installing the lasted driver off the NVIDIA site NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run i change the run level to 3 and use the
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run" i comes up with the licence agrement i agree amd the driver begins to install then it comes up with this message

no matching precompiled interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp sit; this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for your kernel

after that it comes up with another error.

The kernel header '/lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/build/inculde/linux/kernel.h' does not exist.

another thing that might help

package kernel-source is not installed

io13 06-27-2006 03:50 PM

does this mean no one has a answer or was the question poorly written?

rshaw 06-27-2006 03:54 PM

you've answered your own question, "sources not installed" you will also need "kernel-syms"

io13 06-27-2006 04:09 PM

okay im really going to sound dump but when i ask that question i dont know how to do it. and your answer does not help me im sorry it may be easyier to pretend that i dont know anything about linux (im not joking)

io13 06-27-2006 04:18 PM

oh i dont know what package kernel-source is

rshaw 06-27-2006 04:27 PM

start yast, go to the software section and search for "kernel" you'll se many different selections, but you only need the packages "kernel-source" and "kernel-syms".

2.6.16.13-4-default should have a source as well Do a search in yast for kernel and you will see it. Just install. Some Distro's use a "stripped" source. Do not install that one. Will not work with Nvidia driver. Hope this helps :D

io13 06-28-2006 11:35 AM

iv searched for those programs and its not coming up

boilertech 07-04-2006 03:07 PM

I've searched for you and found this http://www.novell.com/products/linux...el-source.html
I looks like the location of the files it needs are in a different location.
Code:

/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.13-4/include/linux/kernel.h
My file is actualy in
Code:

/lib/modules/2.6.15-oci4.lve/build/include/linux/kernel.h
I am running PcLinuxOS though. What type of card are you trying to setup? Have you looked in Yast for an updated Nvidia driver?
