kernel 2.6.6 won't recognize pcmcia card

I'm not sure if this post goes here or in the general questions, but it's a compile question which is part of a bigger problem:
First off, I'm running Slackware 9.1 on an IBM Thinkpad. Just yesterday, I performed my first kernel compile with much success (pat's me back). If I'm not mistaken, Slackware currently runs by default on 2.4.22, and so I got 2.6.6. The only problem is that it doesn't recognize my Netgear FA511 PCMCIA card (but it works fine on the old kernel). I might just have to keep tweaking the kernel configuration, but anyway...
I'm thinking the problem might be I have to compile the pcmcia package for the tulip_cb driver. But when I do, the compiler gives me a message stating that the module init tools are too old for the kernel (tools version = 0.98.something) and I need to upgrade to 2.95.something.
So if compiling and installing the tulip driver doesn't work, can anyone help me out with tweaking the kernel? I know that it needs PCMCIA support, but I don't know if I'm missing anything else.

Another bit of useful information might be that whenever linux boots up, it'll start PCMCIA ok, but the message after that says, cannot start inet service, no sockets open.

YAHOO

After many repeated attempts of compiling the kernel... IT FINALLY WORKS!!! I still need to figure out what modules to include, but that's the thing...
I was compiling everything into the kernel, and so there weren't many modules being built. So I made the things I wanted support modular, and I now have internet, I just still need to figure out why sound isn't working right. It's been hit and miss with each kernel compile.
But Slackware 9.1 is running NICELY on kernel 2.6.6 -- I LOVE IT!!!!
