installing new kernel from rpm

i use apt-get to upgrade my system and whenever i try an upgrade to a newer kernel, kernel-2.4.22-1.2199.nptl, it gives me this error:

kernel-2.4.22-1.2199.nptl
awk: cmd. line:1: $2 == "/
awk: cmd. line:1: ^ unterminated string

the new kernel wont boot, gives some error that says no init found try passing init=option to kernel. has anyone seen this before.

thanks,
Paul
