Post Installing new apps in Ubuntu

Is there a doc on installing an app for us newbies? I hate winblows, any Linux suggestions please?

This documentation should help:-

Basically you would use the Software Center to install what ever app you want to.
If the app is not available than you could go and get the ppa for it and tell APT to install it.
