You can try both of them to compare.
Install a Virtual Machine and run them to see which one you like.

<OR> download the iso's and make a usb flash drive bootable and try them live.
If the BIOS will let you change the boot order.

Debian is pure Debian. There are not any remnants of any Ubuntu packages on a Debian system.

Lubuntu is a spin off of Ubuntu and has similar software and the same package management system as Ubuntu.

The requirements for Debian is 256 meg's of RAM and really 1 Gig is recommended and 10 Gig's of space on the HDD.

The mininum for Lubuntu is a Pentium 2, Pentium 3 or a Celeron with 128 meg's or RAM.
However; a CD should not be used to install on a system with less than 1 GB of RAM.
Download the alternative ISO. OR try making a usb flash drive bootable.

Most people that run Puppy Linux run it as a Live CD.
I could be wrong but I don't thing Puppy is suited for installation.

As far as a Browser goes; I use FF but that's most likely too heavy.
Like you I'm not a fan of Midori it's just to basic.

Maybe give Chrome or Chromium a spin. Have a look at Vivaldi.

XFCE and LXDE are more of a lightweight DE that you can consider.

For mail, mutt. Learn to use it and you will never look back. And it is really low on memory consumption. If you insist on GUI, Claws Mail. It does not tax you in memory for things you do not use. Though did not use it for a long time, because of mutt and Gnus(this one is part of Emacs). For browsers, depends what you want of browser. Browser that are low on memory use are also bit low on functionality.

You are wrong :P Most people run puppy in frugal install.

Getting back to the main point of this thread: I rebooted my computer yesterday, so everything about my installed PyGTK, that eventually needed that, happened. But Gajim still gives the error:

And about the dependencies you suggested (pycrypto, pyOpenSSL), I cannot find them in Synaptic. As said in a previous post, the packages that appear are called "python-pycryptopp" and "python-pycryptopp-dbg", their version is 0.5.17-1. pyOpenSSL gives no result.

The root for pycrypto would be sf.net/projects/pycrypto ?

And for pyOpenSSL would be pyopenssl.org ?

pycrypto project on SF does not have any change since 2013/04.

pyOpenSSL was updated there last month.

Now I am thinking about contacting Gajim project about my problem. It seems that more details are needed in Gajim documentation about its needs. Do you agree with me?

Than you would have to install them manually in this order: pycrypto, pyOpenSSL, python-nbxmpp and than install Gajim.

You can try contacting the Gajim Team and see what they say.

I run Debian on a P3 with 96 MB of ram. It works fine, but I don't run a GUI.

Those are nice findings! (: I will check the existence of a mailing list or something similar for the project. I imagine they would prefer that path first. Gajim is an important project in the free software world.
