installing MySQL on Ubuntu

hi all
it's my first time to deal with Linux. everybody told me Ubuntu is the easiest to start with. but now I need to install MySQL 5. I got confused what to download from the MySQL website that would be best suitable for Ubuntu 9.04 operating system. Finally i decided to download " MySQL for Linux x86 generic RPM (dynamically linked)". [Actually i do not know what the difference between all these compilations]. in found the link below to guide me through the installation steps:

http://rpbouman.blogspot.com/2006/01...ubuntu_07.html

i went through all the steps. but when I try to run the command mysql start. i get the error message:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

Would anybody tell me if i installed the right compilation for my Ubuntu operating system and if there is any document for the installation procedure of MySQL on Ubuntu.

It is better to get Mysql from synaptic package manager ( System >Administration >Synaptic Package Manager)
and search up MySQL 5.1 and click on it and get the client. Next go to Applications and click on Add/Remove and search up mysql and get the Mysql Admin and install it. next go to mysql admin and connect to the server.

That I don't know. I am pretty new to linux myself. Try googling it, that most of the time works but you'll have to visit a ton of places.
