installing mplayer and skins on debian woody | howto

this assumes you are using debian 3 "woody" and you have root permission on the box. it also helps if you've got a fast connection.

open an xterm window and su to root:

su

hit enter key and enter your password and hit the enter key.

now type:

vi /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://marillat.free.fr/ stable main
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
paste all that text somewhere in sources.list

then type this:

:wq

and then hit enter key.

now type:

apt-get update

now type:

apt-get install mplayer-686*

let it do it's thing and after it finishes you type:

update-menus

Now I'm using openbox but it should be the same for blackbox and fluxbox. on gnome and kde you're on your own.

apps->viewers->Mplayer

See it? ; )

ok - let's add a different skin.

type this:

cd /usr/share/mplayer/Skin

and hit enter.

now type this:

wget http://ftp.lug.udel.edu/MPlayer/Skin...-1.1.1.tar.bz2

now type this:

bunzip2 pla*.bz2

and hit enter.

now type this:

tar -xvf pla*.tar

you should now see a directory named plastic and a directory named default.

now type this:

exit

and hit enter.

done. try to open mplayer and switch skins. go here for more skins.

as is usually the case I've included a couple screenshots.
