installing linux problem
hi.
i have install operating systems many times on my hard drive, but now have run into a problem i cannot solve. i cannot install mandrake 8.2, says i have overlapping partitions. decided to run fdisk, have done so, says i have extended and primary active partition when i try to delete extended, it says i cannot because of logical partitions. when i try to delete logical, it says none defined help- is my drive ruined, cannot delete my partitions? i am thinking i have screwed up the partition table, thinking it,s not repairable, and i will need to get new drive, am i correct? |
No your drive is probably not destroyed, its the dos fdisk
program that's not able to remove that partition So you can try several things you can try for inst. this linux901.tripod.com/s1-q-and-a-removing.html do a search in www.google.com/linux or use for the ranish partitioner for one dos based floppy or use one of the one floppy based linuxes like toms root boot but the install cd in rescue mode can do the same good luck |
WELL, i am getting red hat installed, hopefully it repartitioned the drive, i will then try mandrake after it get red hat installed. should work since its partitioned for linux.
thanks, |
Let me know what happens
Hey, I have exactly the same problem. I couldn't get winme to work or mandrake or freebsd. Win Me installation said something about bad sectors at the end of the drive and it shutdown the computer. I managed to put XP on but I still have some problems. Maybe it's the MBR. I just read on how to take care of it but do let me know how ur installation goes.

fdisk will fix it
Not the Windows fdisk. I had a similar problem and corrected it with the fdisk on the RedHat 7 installation CD. Use the fdisk partitoning program when it comes to that point instead of Disk Druid, but be very careful as it works directly on the disk. After you correct the problem you can go back to Disk Druid to complete your partioning. You can do anything with this fdisk utility!
