Installing linux
 

Hello, I am new to computers. I am having problems installing ubuntu 6.10 on a gateway 433C it has 10G hard drive and 256MB installed. 98se is installed and I have no problems reformatting it. But when I use ubuntu cd I get stuck when it says can't access tty; job control off.

That 6.10 Ubuntu is awfully buggy if you ask me. I'm quite Linux-savvy myself and yet I haven't been able to install it.

In fact, the issue you're experiencing is affecting quite a few (potential) Ubuntu users ; unfortunately, very few of them have been able to come up with anything even approaching a solution. And then that solution tends to work for only one or two people but not for the rest of them.

I would recommend installing Ubuntu 6.06 instead. It appears to be far more stable on the whole. Or if you prefer something more up-to-date, you could have a look at PCLinuxOS, which is even better for people who are new to Linux. For one thing, because it comes pre-installed with many things (flash, codecs, drivers, etc.) that you would otherwise have to hunt down yourself. Only I don't know whether 256MB RAM is enough, you'll have to find out from their site.

I love Ubuntu 6.10, I just couldn't install it with the first iso, I had to download the alternate.

PCLinuxOS will run just fine with 256mb of ram, I ran it on my old Dell Latitude C600 with a P3 700 and 256mb ram with no problems.

Try the alternate install cd for Ubuntu or go with 6.0.6 LTS.

Thanks for the help, also tried the 6.06 version and it stopped after installing gnome desktop. I don't know if I am answering all that helped the right way also, sorry
