installing limewire (plus a little venting)

I need some help with installing Limewire. I get this error message:

No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.

I've installed Java for mozilla already, is java virtual machine different?

This sort of stuff is why LInux is so grating at times. The past couple of days I've been trying to install Quake2, Quake3, Unreal Tournament, eDonkey, Limewire, the new ATI driver, Alien package converter, and whatever else I've forgotten. NONE of them are installed. I'm new to linux but I'm not stupid. I also understand that this isn't windows and I shouldn't really compare the two, but really, this is irritating. Nothing ever seems to work 'out of the box', you have to spend days pissing around just to get some little program to work. I'll admit that once it's installed though, it's wonderful.

Okay, I'm done venting.

JDK or JRE

Did you set your class path of you java SDK or your runtime enviornment ? if not here is an example of how to configure
your use Emacs or Vi to edit your .bash_profile enviornment with a little tweeking of course.

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.2.2
#the above line tells the system where to find the Java home directory.
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
#the above line adds the Java home directory to your path.
export CLASSPATH=./:~/java/classes
#the above line tells Java where to find your class

Use apollon and giFT.... FastTrack (KaZaA) Network is the best!

(Apollon is the GUI and giFT the server... do a google search and you'll find both projects)Works really great.

http://gift.sf.net but then you don't want that nasty kludgy KDE junk like apollon... use giftcurs. suer fast and effective.

Hey kshim5

thanks a lot for that clarification! I found many posts here for this issue, and was struggling with editing the file. Wasn't sure where or how to input that.

Now I was able to install LimeWire with no problems!

let's hope that stuff is as good as they say :D

yeah, just update the path variable in ~/.bash_profile.

BUT i strongly recomend againsed lime wire !
its slow, and full of spyware !
and offers poor selections of files.

i recomend gtk-gnutella
far better that any p2p system (even the mother of all, kazaa)

quintar_51 10-23-2003 10:41 AM

Oh no!

are you kidding? All that work and now can't use LW?

I once installed Gnutella on Windows and it was really slow. I couldn't even find anything I was looking.

Well, I'll give that a shot.

hmmmm I wonder if Ad-Aware can be run on linux using wine...

qwijibow 10-25-2003 07:29 PM

gtk-gnutella is not available for windows,, is it ??????
i thought not !!!

anyway, yeah, gtk-gnutella has everything you want,,,
ALSO, gtk-gnutella connects to many other clients, including Limewire.
so whatever you can get on limewire is available on gtk-gnutella too.
