Installing LAME mp3 encoder

I'm trying to install an mp3 encoder so I can rip cd's. I dled the tarball for lame, and did the whoel ./configure make make install and it went off w/o any errors. The I tried to use KAudioCreator to rip a CD, and the track indicator would go slowly to 100% like it was working, then I wuold get an error saying the track was not encoded. Where did I go wrong?
