I am trying to install JDK 6 but I am not succeeding.

The file is in /home/dustin/Downloads
So in the terminal I have been typing:
chmod +x filename.bin (enter)
sudo ./filename.bin (enter)

Java Agreement
y (enter)

Now, what do I type to install java6-bin java6-jre?

Every time I try something and check it with java -version, I get:

Which distro are you using? It is likely that your package manager can install the correct version for you.

It is update 22 Linux i586. I have tried sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre and that didn't work. It is very frustrating. This is on Ubuntu 9.10 the Karmic Koala release.

download openjdk from the software center. just type it in on the search bar.

There are 500 pages to go through. Do you have anything else to narrow down the search?

Ubuntu 9.10 is no longer supported.

You should update to a supported release.

it's the one titled OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime. It's the first result in the ubuntu software center. And you should also update to ubuntu 11.04
