installing in FC4 ...yum ??
 

Hey guys Ive recently installed FC$...Ive been using mandrake 10.0 for a while....... well I was trying to install a software and it asked me for qmake...if I were running Mandrake i would have run urpmi qmake to install it from my CDs... what should I do in FC yum install qmake did not reveil any results.

Another question lets say I want to install ethereal ...if i were running Mandrake I would have typed urpmi ethereal and hte app would be installed from my CDs while in FC yum install ethereal would install it from the net ..... so what should I do to install from my CDs.

Installing synaptic and apt-get will make your life a whole lot easier with a RedHat (or any rpm-based) system. http://freshrpms.net/apt/

Note that synaptic isn't required, but google for it and you'll soon want it :). Essentially, apt-get is your "go out and get me this package" tool, and synaptic is the gui wrapper around it, so you can open up synaptic, check/uncheck some checkboxes and then click go and watch your system update. As an added bonus, add some repositories to your apt setup and get more rpms than you'll ever need.

Also, if you want to install something, you can just download the rpm if you can find it and install it that way...

Thanks for the advice I did it but I still want a method to install software from my CDs instead of the net.

First of all, I think you will be happy w/ Fedora. I used Mandrake for 2 years, switched to FC3, now FC4, and never looked back.
Anyway a great tool for package management, and everything else in Linux is WEBMIN! http://webmin.com
Install the webmin rpm, open a browser,goto http://localhost:10000 , login as root and go to System >> Packages, and you can view all installed packages and add from CD.

There is an add/remove software tool in the menus in the gui. I can't remember exactly where it is once I get home I will take a look.

System-config-packages lets you install packages from your CD's, but can break stuff if you happen to upgrade your system using yum, apt or up2date. If you have broadband just don't bother with system-config-packages, its a totally useless app that causes more problems in the long run. Use YUM to manage packages on your system.
