Installing icons w/o control center in KDE?

OK this is almost funny, I installed a couple new icon themes, crystal gt and svg so i removed the older version of the crystal set that comes with suse thinking it wouldnt matter, but then all my icons dissappear and now when i try to reopen the icon section of the control center it immediatly crashes. The icon sets I installed are still in /opt/kde3/share. And here is the output of the control center crash if that would be any help.

"The icon sets I installed are still in /opt/kde3/share."

You can probably get your desktop icons back without fixing the Control Center. Do you still have the icon titles on your desktop? If so, then right click on the titile or just above it. Click on properties. Click on the blank button where the icon would normally be. Click on other icons. Click on Browse. Then find the file containing the icon that you want and click on that icon. Click on OK and you should be good to go.

Actually, I keep the icons that I use in my own private library in user space. That way I don't have to scramble to find my prefered icons whenever I install a new system.

After you recover your desktop icons then you can look into recreating whatever has disappeared from the Control Center.

yeah i tried right clicking on them and restoring the icons but that also caused a crash, it only affects my root user, everything works fine with my normal user. . also anything containing kde icons of any kind instantly crashes when i try to load it, like konquorer
I used the option in the control center to remove the original crystal set. I then used the SuSE cd's to reinstall all of kde and that brought back the icons on my task bar only and most all kde apps still crash under root. Again i dont have any of these problems in my common user account so is there anyway to port the settings over to my root user?

" is there anyway to port the settings over to my root user?"

Rather than copying the settings from user I recommend that you start fresh. Boot a rescue CD and mount your / partition. Rename the file
/root/.kde
to:
/root/.kde.old

Then boot and log into root. KDE will come up like it did the very first time after an install. You can recreate your desktop.

If this doesn't work then you can use the rescue CD to put /root/.kde back the way it was and think of something else.
