Now, when I try to run aptitude (or apt - or any number of other applications) I get:

Code:

aptitude: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt8messagesIcE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4
'seems I ought to be able to correct problem with dpkg (which appears to be working) or by renaming or moving certain directories, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

Perhaps this?

Thanks.

Looks like a known bug, reported Joey Hess. You're among the Debian elite!

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=623280

Joey worked around the problem by manually upgrading libc6 with dpkg.

Cheers,

Evo2.

Ha! the operative word here is "among". In the 10 years I've been using Debian I never expected to even be among!

In any event, Thanks to evo2 and help from Mr. Hess, I was able to resolve this problem pretty painlessly.

Without a graphical browser and most other graphical apps working I ssh'd to the box (vostro) from my wife's imac.

Code:
wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6_2.11.2-13_amd64.deb
placed the *.deb in /var/cache/apt/archives.

Code:
dpkg --install libc6_2.11.2-13_amd64.deb
complained that locales would break

Long story short, I got the updated locales, got the updated libc-bin, installed libc6 and libc-bin then locales.

Code:
