Matt, I dont know how to thank you enough for what youv'e done today. I'll pass it on when I can.
I was able to get it restarted, went the the localhost 631 - logged on, checked for my printer, and there was still only six generic printers listed under epson. I just dont know what I'm doing wrong. I reinstalled the latest gutenprint files, and everything LOOKS like it is installing fine but I am stuck. What can I do? I may end up having to buy another printer, but I just bought this one . . . . . .

No problem, just avoiding doing some work... :)

There's no need to bring the printer back yet. It really should work. It's just a matter of getting CUPS to realize that you have really installed the printer drivers it needs. One other thing to try might be going to the kde print manager (in the settings sub-menu) I forgot about that option, since I use fluxbox -- without all of the bells and whistles of kde...

See what you see there... If nothing else you can use that old windows trick -- reboot.

Ok, so check this out. I use the printing setup under "system settings" "printing" and first of all, I deleted my printer yesterday, and its not even reconizing it today . . . , but, no prob. I get to the new queue dialog and go through the process, but it wont let me anywhere near Gutenprint . . . it only lets me use omni so0 . . . . I make a printer with the won driver, only close top mine (I have a stylus cx4600 but I put in 5200 for the driver just to check it out, and becuase 4600 isnt listed. anyway, one I do that it allows me to switch to the gutenprint driver for 5200.( but nothing else) so, I go to local host 631 and lo and behold I get into printer settings and it shows gutenprint settings! yeah . . . . .but! when I decide this is wonderful and now I can change my driver back to 4600, it all changes as well. They dont show anything but six common drivers, none of them what I need. I know from two people, one of them the guy who spent so much time with me yesterday that gutenprint does indeed work with the epson stylus cx 4600. just not for me.

SO, what I would really like is for somebody that really knows what to do, to monkey walk me through this thing (probably from scratch) so that I can get my printer up and running so I can get proposals out. Please? by the way, it is showing that I am working with cups version 1.1.19 at localhost 631. I dont know if this means anything or not. also, I re-installed Gutenprint from scratch just to make sure but who knows . . . .HELP!

Try upgrading cups to a newer version. Also, it really helps to be as specific and clear as you can about the problem you are having. Google for "cups fedora" or "cups fedora epson" -- there are plenty of how to's out there.

could it be that you see there 6 drivers and a few of them are called sth. like gimp-print ...? gutenprint is the successor name of the former gimp-print... so perhaps they are already there?

There are so many threads about printer installation, printing-howto and the gutenprint driver can support many printer models.

I have installed the gutenprint binary package for inkjet printer.
The USB connection of the printer is ok, printer is found by lsusb

Do I need to install GIMP and how to config like choose the printer model?

If I simply print a text file lpr -Pprinter_name file_name
the printer lights is flashing for few times but no print out.
