Installing gui programs (any distro I guess)

Hi,
I've just finished installing Slackware 10 on a laptop, as my first ever distro, and was wondering about a few Linux unwritten rules that must be obvious to most people, as they appear to be very unwritten (the search doen't help)!

My first problem is "Where do I install programs?" I guessed "/usr/programName" but is that right: what's the equivalent of Window's Program Files?

As I've installed Firefox now, in that location, can I just uninstall it by deleteing the files- I read that there's no registry in Linux, so I guess this would work?

Thanks alot for any help,

Welcome to LQ.

It is up to you where you install programs - most people would say /usr/local or /opt.

It is a good idea to install them like:
/opt/firefox/0.9.3

Then symlink to a current version:
ln -s /opt/firefox/0.9.3 /opt/firefox/current

This way you just need to change the symlink to current and anybody that links to the current version gets access to the new version automatically.
