Installing GTK+ on Knoppix 3.7

I'm trying to install GTK+ 2.4.14 on my Knoppix 3.7 box but noooooooooooo it's not working! I compiled and installed all the necessary packages including Atk 1.8.0, Glib 2.4.8, and Pango 1.4.1under normal procedure (./configure make make install as root) but GTK+'s configure shell script complains that the package atk is not present. HOW THE HELL DO I GET THIS STRAIGHT? Do the environment variables need to be adjusted? if so then how? There are many programs I'd like to use that won't compile without GTK+ including Nmapfe and GAIM. I'm running Knoppix 3.7 (Debian) i686 X11Linux kernel version 2.4.27 Xwindow system is KDE 3.3.1 PLEASE HELP!!!
