Installing Grub error.

"Sorry, Installing GRUB failed.
New root filesystem may be faulty"

I'm getting this message everytime when I try to install mepis linux.

I have 1 harddrive with 3 partitions:

C: (Windows XP)
D: (Empty)
E: (Empty)

They are each over the 26 GB.

I tried to install Mepis on the D: harddisk which is also the root.
I made a swap of 3 GB that I'm using for swap.

I want my computer to have both Windows XP and Linux installed so that I can dual boot and just simply choose which OS I'm going to use.
I'm a total linux newbie and hopefully somebody can help me out cause I'm kinda stuck.

Thanks in advance!

Daan

dual booting in linux

Ok. I have only installed Mepis once and decided I didn't really like it, but I did successfully install it! So! I would try reinstalling Mepis and when it gets to the partitioning step I would completely delete all partitions EXCEPT FOR THE WINDOWS PARTITION. DON'T MESS WITH THAT. Just want to make that clear. Ok so yeah I would create probably a 5 GB / "root" partition, probably a 1 GB swap partition, and then like a 15 GB /home partition. So once that is all set continue on and when you get to the part of setup when you install the boot loader just make sure that you install it to the Master Boot Record. THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IF YOU WANT TO DUAL-BOOT WINDOWS AND LINUX. It sounds like you were installing it on the root partition and yeah you can do that but it doesn't work as well as far as I know. So carefully try that and hopefully it works for you. I didn't have any problems installing Mepis and I installed the boot loader to the MBR so I would imagine you can (especially if you only have 1 HD). =) Good luck.

No I did install it to the Master Boot Record, but it failed. :(
Thanks for your help anyway.

Maybe someone else can help me out?

Doesn't Mepis give you a choice of bootloaders? Did you try installing Lilo instead? Lilo is quite vicious and therefore more successful at overwriting the slightly-less-vicious Windows bootloader than perhaps GRUB is.

I have done between 10 & 20 SimplyMEPIS installs since I started using it last Oct. (2004). I don't recall ever seeing your error msg.

Did you follow mwallace's advice about deleting, repartitioning, & re-installing? It is very sound.

Your post is a little contradictory:
Quote:

They are each over the 26 GB
Quote:

a swap of 3 GB
Perhaps a listing of
Code:

fdisk -l
(in a "code" block, please -- it preserves the column formatting) would be helpful.

I love the characterizations:
Quote:

Lilo is quite vicious and ... the slightly-less-vicious Windows bootloader
Nice phrasing, motub.

However, given GRUB's greater flexibility & ease of administration, I would consider lilo a last resort.

I really think that
"Sorry, Installing GRUB failed.
New root filesystem may be faulty"
is saying that starting over is a good idea. Ergo, "follow mwallace's advice" above.

probably is because your hard drive is corrupted
try to format with window cd installation

Before trashing the whole drive, try mwallace's advice about deleting, repartitioning, & re-installing?

It is very sound.
