I like gnome 2 very much and I want to install it in ubuntu 12.04 and I want to install the same gnome desktop as I was using in 10.04. I did not want to install the gnome shell. Could some body help in installing gnome desktop in ubuntu 12.04 alike 10.04 gnome desktop.

Gnome 2.x is dead and buried for Ubuntu. You could try installing a Gnome 2 lookalike called Cinnamon (from Linux Mint guys) or use a MATE based distro.

Failing this you could move to Debian Squeeze which still has Gnome2.x or, one of the other distro's that still use it - check Distrowatch.

I wouldn't suggest you to install Squeeze because in couple of weeks, when freeze process starts (Debian mailing lists say it will be in the second half of June - link), Squeeze will become old-stable and Wheezy will become stable... But you could install Cinnamon which is a good DE for those who are missing old gnome 2.x.

Best regards!

Squeeze will be old-stable around Feb/March 2013 - Wheezy development gets frozen in June to iron out any bugs etc. Once Squeeze goes old-stable in 2013 it will still get a year of support after that.

+1 to Debian Squeeze; it is a fantastic distro! Other good Gnome 2 distros include CentOS, Scientific Linux, and Fuduntu.

And Ubuntu 10.04 has almost a year left (support ends April 2013) so there is no need to upgrade if you don't like 12.04.
