Installing GCC from source = catch22 ?

Could someone please be kind enough to explain how the process works?
If you want install the GCC compiler from source, you need to compile the source withh ... a compiler right ?
So it looks loke a chicken and egg situation.
Do you need to install a GCC RPM first in order to compile the compiler you want to install ?
I'm asking the question because I want to install a cross compiler for the Dreamcast gaming console.
I checked the GCC installation manual at gnu website, but it is made for geeks.
A word about my background: I can compile simple programs with gcc or g++ like:
gcc helloword.c -o helloword
or simple graphics programs using the SDL graphics libraries

Thanks in advance for any info, opinion, URL or just R.T.F.M.

Yes you'll need a compiler to compile your compiler. Makes you wonder how they compiled the first compiler. Anyways the lfs book at website might be a good one to read. It walks you through the complete process of building a linux system. You however need a host linux system to build it in. Kinda the same problem as your compiler problem. The book also includes how to compile the compiler.
