installing firefox 2.0

Hey everyone I'm new to Linux and these forums. I installed Fedora 6 and i'm trying to get the newest version of firefox installed.
I went to mozilla and downloaded the new (2.0) version of firefox.
It ploped the "firefox-2.0.0.1.tar.gz" on my desktop and I can't figure out an easy way of getting it to install. Now I'm really new to Linux, so can anyone out there give me a step by step walkthrew of how to get it to install
remember "i'm an ultra Newb"

Welcome to LQ!

The easiest way to install the new Firefox is to extract the tarball that you downloaded, and move the resulting directory to /usr/local. Then change the link in /usr/bin to point to firefox 2. Enter the following commands

Code:
cd desktop
tar -xzvf firefox-2.0.0.1.tar.gz
su
(enter roots password)
mv firefox /usr/local
mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox1.5
ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox /usr/bin
Note that for most software installation (other than firefox2), you should use the "Add/Remove Software" utility. This will download and install programs that are part of Fedora for you, along with any other programs that they need.
Firefox is the only program that is installed in the above manner.

I hope this helps

Try entering the command "firefox" in a terminal windows, and see what heappens.

I'm not sure if you can remove Firefox 1.5 without removing other stuff as well.

I mis-typed the command above for the symbolic link. It should be:
Code:
ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox /usr/bin
Remove the symbolic link you created earlier, and try the above command as root. I have also changed the command in my above post.

Try typing using tab-completion. Type fir and press tab. All the files in that directory and programs in your PATH starting with fir will be listed, or if there is only one then the command will be completed for you. Hopefully, firefox is one of them You will find this very useful.
