Installing FC8

I was installing FC8 to dual boot with windows xp on a pentium 4 stone machine. After installation FC8 boots into a black screen with a stationary cursor. Clicking a mouse button does not work and keyboard keys are not working as well.

On the other hand Windows xp boots fine. What is it that I have missed
during installation? Please help!!

It sounds like there might be a problem with your xorg.conf file. I'm not sure that I know enough to help.
I assume you are using the default x driver (vesa) and that you haven't loaded another driver (eg nvidia).
I have had similar, but not exactly the same, problems which went away after revising my driver.
What happens if you hit alt-f7 (ie press f7 while pressing alt key)? That may start the x-server...if it is virtual term 7.
Hopefully someone who knows more will pick up on this.

Cheers,

what do u mean by booting into a black screen? do u see startup messages when it's booting up? what i mean is from GRUB you'll be asked for a kernel/OS to boot and when you choose your fedora system do u get to the point when it says "Starting [service name] [OK]"? let me know.

anyway, here's a quick fix u can try:
1. boot to runlevel 3, fedora8 boot into runlevel 5(multiuser with gui) by default. to do this, at the grub screen, highlight the fedora kernel u'r using to boot and press "e" to edit its config. at the line where it says /vmlinuz....... add "3" at the end of the line without the quotes and press ENTER then "b" to boot.
2. hopefully, if u'r graphical setting is just the problem, u'll get a login prompt. log in as root and edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf(remember to back it up first). Look for the "Section" line:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "nVidia Corporation GeForce Go 7900 GS"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
Defaultdepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Modes "1920x1200"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Change the value of Modes to something like "1024x768" or "1280x1024" or whichever suits your taste, but it's advisable to set this value to a low resolution for testing right now. Save and exit and when you get the command prompt run "startx". check if the gui is now working.

anyway, update me on this.
