Installing emacs on Ubuntu help me plz.

Ok im new to ubuntu(actually linux in general) I've used red hat in school to write programs and stuff but i need to do it at home on my laptop so i just installed Ununtu using the disk I received through the mail. Now my question is how do I install the emacs editor the gcc compiler and all that good stuff. I've tried sudo apt-get install Emacs and just says couldn't find the packages.

Also do I need to be hooked up to the internet to install this stuff because I thought I could install it from the disk. A step by step explanation would be greatly appreciated. Like I said I'm new to Linux in general besides what I have done in school, which isn't that much if you look at linux as a whole, never really installed anything before, so I'm new but very eager to learn. Thanks in advance

Emacs is probably available under a slightly different name. On my Debian system it is available as emacs21. I suggest that you start the synaptic program which is a GUI for apt-get. Then use the synaptic search function to look for the emacs package.
