Installing emacs on SuSE 9.0

I've been trying to install emacs on my new SuSE 9.0 setup - for some reason it doesn't come as standard - but can't get it to run.

I've followed all the regular steps:

1. Download the latest stable version (21.3) from

2. ./configure

3. make

4. make install

Now when i type "emacs" I get the following error message:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
connections from your machine.

Any idea what's going wrong?

(btw echo $DISPLAY returns :0.0

and, even weirder, this only happens when I'm logged in as root.

When I'm logged in as a normal user, emacs starts without any problems...???
