Installing Eclipse on Rafaela

I'm trying to set up a web dev IDE. I downloaded the .gz file directly from IBM, and moved the eclipse folder to /opt. It opens ok, but somehow I'm guessing that's not the whole story about installing it. There is a video on youtube about installing Eclipse using Ubuntu make. Is that how to do it? Also I had a look at installing Netbeans with the software installer, but the Netbeans that is available is 4 years old. That's crazy. PHP 7 is out, so to go back to 2011 is nonsense with regard to cutting edge technologies and languages. I'm thinking the Eclipse version is similarly out of date. What is the best solution please?

normally you install software with your package manager
Eclipse should be in the mint repos

to check
Code:
su -
apt search eclipse

------- then install it ---

apt-get install eclipse

Installed.

Just a note: The version in the repos was way out of date, as was netbeans (4-5 years out of date). I dl's the most recent stable Eclipse for PHP developers from the Eclipse website, and googled a few pages on getting it installed, and so far with minimum use and testing all is good.

Thank you John VV
