Installing DRI on Intel i915gm

Ok I posted before as to how to set up 3D accelleration on i915 but I got no replies (glxinfo kept giving back Mesa). So I followed the directions as followed as from here:

then it directed me to:

Everything was fine and peachy till I ran the i915 snapshot and it said it couldn't load the modules, despite me downloading them and untar them into the relative directory. When ever I try startx it says it can't load the modules. Is there a way to fix this? Also is there a way I can start from scratch one? Maybe do a apt-get remove xserver-xorg and anything corresponding to X so I can at least get X to boot again?

I'm running Ubuntu 5.10 with 6.8 (a n00b trying to upgrade it to 6.9) on an Acer Aspire 1640.

Please guys, I'm really at a lost. Hopefully I'll get some response with this one. Anything will be great!

Well, I can tell only that with SuSE I have no problem with that. I've read tons of manuals, infos, etc. just to discover that I just have to check "3d acceleration" box on. And that's it.

OpenSuSE 10.1A3 /with lots of updates since installation :-))/, modprobe agpart and two other modules, yast, 3d acceleration, glxgears show above 1000 fps. I'm happy :-)
