installing devel-packages and gcc-compiler

hi everybody,

my problem is:
i wanted to install an irc-client on suse linux 9.1., when i tried to compile the sourcecode the system said:

no c-compiler in the path

so i downloaded the gcc-compiler , and tried to install it, then the system said:

glibc-develpackages needed

ok, so i installed these as well (glib2-devel-2.2.3-117.i586.rpm) without problems , then i tried again to install the gcc-compiler, then the sys said:

glibc-devel is needed by gcc-3.3.3-41

help is really appreciated, what did i do wrong?

glibc -- gnu c library provids core dynamic linking and core c library
glib -- is an extra library that extends glibc and is mainly used by gtk+ developers

two different things
