installing Chart::Base perl module

I downloaded Chart::Bars from cpan - for some reason the apt-get is broken. I unzipped and untarred the file to a directory and cd'd to that directory. I followed the command below from this page http://servers.digitaldaze.com/exten...l/modules.html

however just get error messages when I try and configure the perl module

% perl5 Makefile.PL `cat FILENAME

% make

% make test

% make install

% make clean

casper@casper-laptop:~/charting$ perl5 Makefile.PL `cat Chart-2.4.1`
cat: Chart-2.4.1: Is a directory

need gd

Ok - you have to cd into the directory Chart-2.4.1

when I makeFile.pl I get this error.

casper@casper-laptop:~/charting/Chart-2.4.1$ perl Makefile.PL

Warning: prerequisite GD 1.2 not found.
Writing Makefile for Chart
casper@casper-laptop:~/charting/Chart-2.4.1$

i downloaded gd 1.2 to a different directory - is there another directory that i should install modules into?

I would try the alternative approach (as root):
Code:
perl -e shell -MCPAN
cpan>install Chart::BARS
which will ask if you want dependencies and will add them in for you.

I am still going to keep trying - i think that there is something wrong with this module.

cpan[1]> install Chart::BARS
CPAN: Storable loaded ok (v2.18)
Going to read '/home/casper/.cpan/Metadata'
Database was generated on Tue, 13 Jul 2010 02:28:35 GMT
CPAN: YAML loaded ok (v0.71)
Going to read 15 yaml files from /home/casper/.cpan/build/
CPAN: Time::HiRes loaded ok (v1.9711)
DONE
Restored the state of none (in 1.9411 secs)
Warning: Cannot install Chart::BARS, don't know what it is.
Try the command

i /Chart::BARS/

to find objects with matching identifiers.

cpan[2]>

There is no CPAN module "Chart::BARS"
# cpan
cpan > install Chart::Bars

About manual install : No cat command.
Just this :
perl Makefile.PL && make && make test && sudo make install
('sudo make install' will install the files to /usr/lib/perl5/)
..

Chart::Bars → : sudo apt-get install libchart-perl
.. will install Chart/Bars.pm etc.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all...-perl/filelist
..
