Installing CentOS on External HD *** Problem***

HI Friend

i an not a unix/Linux Expert but i have laptop has WindowsXP and now i want to install CentOS on my External HD but problem is every time i installed it saying "GURB HARD DRIVE ERROR".

i don't know what to do may i can get some expert tips please.

i just want to have my open screen whcih showd windows XP and CentOS Option and than if i click on XP it runs Windows XP and if i select CentOS it runs from External HD.

Please advice and need step by step tips please .

Is your laptop capable of booting from the external hard drive?? If yes then make sure the external hard drive is attached before starting the laptop. You may need to build a custom kernel which has usb support added in. You might want to install grub to the MBR of the external drive and set in the BIOS the boot order to boot from the external hard drive first.
