I would help to know what the software is. Have you tried actually listing what *is* in the directory, and reading README, INSTALL etc?

You don't install bz2 files. "bz2" refers to compression of a file using bzip2. Quite often you see files with a .tar.bz2 extension, which is presumably what you're referring to. "tar" is for "tape archive" and is basically a way of grouping files together in one file. As such, these files (or "tarballs") can contain any kind of files, not just software to be installed.

If you've downloaded the source code for some software in this format, then please answer dive's questions..
