Installing Blackdown Java v1.1.8

I've installed the subject Java runtime, because a program I need required it (doesn't run will under Java2). Installation involved unpacking the tar.bz2 archive into an appropriate directory. By eyeball inspection, the installation seems to be in order.

But an attempt to run the executable (jre) from the directory in which it resides gets the response:

*****
bash: jre: command not found
*****

It is right there! It is executable ("x"s for everybody in the permissions.

What to I have to do to make it run?
