Installing BasKet Note Pads on a non-KDE system
 

I've discovered BasKet, and love it. However, I don't use KDE, and installing it on something else (CrunchBang in my case, which is Ubuntu-based) can mean a huge number of dependencies. (e.g. 28 MB just for kde-icons-oxygen, an icon theme).

I don't know if most of them are actually needed though - relatively few "k..." programs are actually showing in the task manager when I run basket: kded, kdeinit, kio_file, klauncher, and knotify.

Can anyone help me with figuring out which dependencies are actually needed? Thanks.

I just had a quick looks at Basket on Debian Lenny (which should be very similar) and I'd say that as long as you’re not installing the “recommended” packages, you need all of them.

The icons and kio plugins will be used inside Basket. But the biggest space hog is kdelibs (seems to extract to about 50 meg). You may be able to mitigate some those dependencies if you build from source, but I couldn’t really help there.

Are you short on drive space? None of the dependencies appear to be anything you need to run, so they’re not eating up memory. Plus if you install practically any other KDE app you’ll need to pull in kdelibs at some point anyway.

I’ve found it’s very common on most Linux desktops to have the core libs for both Gnome and KDE installed as you normally end up with one or two apps from the ‘other’ DE.
