installing a vnc server on red hat

Our db vendor is overnighting us a copy of Red Hat 8 and the Linux version of their db b/c the Windows one has been giving us trouble, and tomorrow we're going to attempt to nuke our Windows box and install everything and put it into production usage right away if it works! Crazy, but...that means we'd really like to VNC into it from the office, which is located across town (and all of our workstations run Windows, so as you can imagine, I'll probably be returning to this forum a lot!).

I've read that some kind of VNC comes with Red Hat, so from your experience do you think we'd need that or some other version, and if so, what would be a good (easy) one for us to install on Red Hat that connects well with Windows versions of VNC? On Windows, we've been using RealVNC and UltraVNC.

Thanks for any recommendations...

hi,there are some binarys on the realvnc homepage:

http://www.realvnc.com/download.html

this are for an older version of redhat, but maybe it will work. if you don't have succes, please go to any rpm serch engie (like www.rpmseek.com) and serch for it.

of course you could try to get any connection using the pakages included on the distribution. in the documentation, you can see with wich versions of vnc it can entablish conections.

for example, im running version 4.0b4 and i can connect to windows vnc's... no problem. vnc is good.

if it does not work, try installing the tar from the vnc website. this isn't very difficult. read the documentation abbout installing.

have a while,

leg
