installing a newer version of python

can any one explain to me how to install the newer version
of python.
i'm following the instructions in their site :
python setup.py install

but this doesn't work

Usually you need to do ./configure, make and make install. If you have a version of python shipped by your distro, then I suggest using a different prefix for your own installation so that it doesn't break modules and other stuff provided by your distros version of python.

could you be more specific about the different prefix you mentioned.
what should i specify doing the procedure with "make" you mentioned so that it will have a different prefix

To use a different prefix, you could do something like

$./configure prefix=/usr/local/python25

The configure part is the one that you tell which directory you want python to be installed in.
