"Installing 2.4.28 kernel instead of 2.6.5
And, I don't have to install everything over do I?"
No. But you may find that some of your software is not backward compatible with kernel 2.4.28 and you may have to install old versions of that software, perhaps do compiles for the old versions on your system. cdrecord comes to mind.
"So, how do I do it?"
You want to install the 2.4.28 kernel as a second kernel and dual boot 2.4.28 and 2.6.5. That way you don't end up with a non-working system if you run into incompatabilities between 2.4.28 and any of the rest of your software. Check to see if your distribution has an rpm or Debian package with kernel 2.4.28. If so then install that package as a second kernel. If your distribution doesn't have a compatible kernel package then you should download the 2.4.28 kernel source, compile your own kernel, and install it as a second kernel.
If you have further questions please tell us what distribution you are using.
