Installed ubuntu 16.04.4 and it didn't work for my needs. Decided to install mint 18.1. HD issues

It didn't overwrite the original HD, and ended up installing to a usb. I assumed it would replace that install, and it didn't. The OG hd has like 500 kb left and keeps giving warning of that (ubuntu 16.04) now the Mint install is giving me an error that a quick google search is revealing has something to do with available space.

wipe Ubunutututu then use the newly regained space for your other OS install.

You should be able to install over Ubuntu with Mint. There should be an option like Erase Disk and install Mint. You could also do the manual install, probably referred to as Something Else and select the Ubuntu partition on which to install Mint and make sure you have selected to format that partition.
